19 Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus,20 by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, 21 and having a High Priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, 25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.
The New King James Version (NKJV) of the Bible titles this passage “Hold Fast Your Confession.” The author (unknown) of Hebrews is writing to the Jewish Christians who were continuing to encounter trials and tribulations even after becoming followers of Jesus. Many Jewish Christians believed that once the Messiah (Jesus) came they would no longer have to endure the trials and tribulations of this world. This is a common misconception that is shared by many Christians in our society today. So, now that we understand the context of this passage, what guidance does the author provide?
The two verses that open this passage, verses 19 and 20, provide critical insight into the personal relationship we now have with God the Father. During the times before Christ’s death on the cross, the only access the Jews had to the Lord were done through the dispensation of the law. But when Jesus came and shed His blood on the cross, the veil was torn between God and His children (us). Jesus is our High Priest and by Him we have access to our Father in heaven!!!! This should cause us to rejoice as Christians because we now are able to have a personal relationship with our Creator!! But we have to finish the passage to get the entire message.
Verse 21 tells us that Jesus wants us to come with a sincere heart. He understands that we are not perfect and that is the reason for our full dependence on Him, but we must SINCERELY come to Him as our sole source of refuge from our evil conscience and to be washed from our sins (verse 22)! Just as Jesus tore the veil, the barrier or mask between God and His children, we are called to remove the masks we wear and to give hearts sincerely for His glory!
We then find out that there will be times of trials and tribulations because the author states “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.” God has promised eternal life for His children. He has promised that we will be able to spend eternity with Him in heaven, never being separated from Him by any measure! This is the word of God, so we must hold fast to these promises because God is faithful! But this is not always easy as there are so many distractions and noises in this world. So what else has He provided us here on earth to help keep our focus on Him?
The CHURCH…corporate worship (verses 24 and 25)! Yes, we are the body of Christ and we each play an integral part in manifesting His glory here on earth. We are called to make disciples and baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. These are individual responsibilities but can be accomplished on a much greater level in UNITY, with other members of the body of Christ. Corporate worship is an essential form of worship that is required by all members of the body of Christ! This is a time where we join together, IN UNITY, to exercise the gifts given to us by God and watch Him pour out His Spirit on His children and while He changes lives!!
